Blossoming with bravery: Waikiki 12-year-old publishes debut novel on life with disabilities

A Waikiki student has transformed lived experience into storytelling, completing a debut novel that reflects life with cerebral palsy, autism, anxiety, and eosinophilic esophagitis. Written over two years, the book centers access, empathy, and inclusion—and aims to raise awareness about accessibility ahead of its community launch on November 22 at the Gary Holland Community Centre.

Her goal is connection: to speak to peers with similar experiences and help parents, teachers, and classmates understand neurodivergent perspectives. Family reflections in the article highlight how the manuscript offers a window into her inner world and why listening closely can push back against ableism that too often dismisses young advocates.

Advocacy is already part of her daily life. She prompted her school to mark the International Day of People with Disability, co-designed the Move to Improve program with Perth Children’s Hospital, joined a national book review project, served as the youngest panellist on disability representation in books, and helped create a teacher resource booklet. These efforts matter for neurodivergent students, families, and educators by addressing barriers named in the social model of disability—where the problems come from environments, not people.

Recognized as a repeat finalist for the WA Youth Awards, she describes the nomination as energizing and a chance to share ideas with like-minded people. With the novel now available for pre-order, the upcoming launch offers a moment to celebrate youth leadership and plan accessible, welcoming events that keep voices like hers at the center.
