Striving to remove barriers that prevent us from building Vibrant, Diverse, Inclusive, Accessible Communities!

ADAPT/EVOLVE Artists and Work

Wooden supine stander with blue padded supports on an arched base, shown on white.
A custom-made stander that centers comfort, adjustability, and everyday dignity—an example of human-centered adaptive design featured in the exhibition.

The exhibition presents a cross-disciplinary exploration of adaptive and inclusive design, gathering work from faculty, students, alumni, and invited collaborators at the Art and Design Gallery. It frames design as care—craft that responds to real needs through co-creation and practical problem-solving grounded in inclusive design principles.

Visitors encounter a wide range of objects and projects, from bespoke mobility aids and wearables to furniture and social practice installations. The page highlights how many pieces are developed with end-users from the start, echoing design-with-not-for approaches that prioritize function, dignity, and removing barriers—an ethos aligned with building a disability-friendly future.

Specific benefits are clear: Blind/Low Vision people are centered through haptic navigation accessories; autistic children are considered in toy concepts engineered for engagement; wheelchair users and other People with Disabilities are reflected in accessible interiors and everyday tools. The work underscores how inaccessible environments create problems that limit participation—and how thoughtful design can expand independence and belonging.

Programming connected to the show invites conversation and learning, encouraging communities to carry these insights into classes, studios, and events. It’s a forward-looking call to design culture that welcomes participation and keeps removing barriers—right down to how we host welcoming and accessible events.
